Megan Ryte accused of plagiarising DJ Lag amid release of new track, 'Culture'

International DJ and Hot 97 radio personality DJ Megan Ryte is facing plagiarism accusations after releasing her new track with will.i.am and ASAP Ferg, “Culture.”

Since the track’s release, Twitter has been alight with comparisons between the song and DJ Lag’s 2016 gqom track “Ice Drop.” The music video opens with a dictionary definition of “culture vulture,” reading: “A person or an organization making profit using honorable practices from a culture they do not care for.” Some have also pointed out similarities in the music videos’ visuals, which both depict overhead shots of a cityscape.

South African DJs and music enthusiasts have called on listeners to dislike the video, which has currently accumulated over 4,000 dislikes, quadrupling its likes.

“This song is a statement record that recognises the importance of Black cultural contributions around the world,” Megan Ryte originally told Complex, who premiered the single.

DJ Lag has since responded to the video, saying “In our tradition respect comes first. Ice Drop is our CULTURE.”
