Hollywood Stars Unite Against Proposed Paramount, Warner Bros. Deal
A Unified Front Against Media Consolidation
A significant coalition of Hollywood A-listers, including Kristen Stewart, Ben Stiller, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jane Fonda, has issued a formal statement of “unequivocal opposition” to the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount. The open letter, which has garnered over 1,000 signatures, highlights deep-seated concerns regarding the impact of further media consolidation on the entertainment industry.
The signatories argue that the merger would exacerbate an already concentrated media landscape, stifling competition at a critical juncture for both the industry and its global audience. By reducing the number of major Hollywood studios to four, the deal threatens to diminish job security, limit creative opportunities, and restrict consumer choice, all while potentially driving up costs.
The Erosion of Creative Diversity
The letter paints a stark picture of an industry under duress, attributing much of the current strain to previous waves of consolidation. “We have witnessed a steep decline in the number of films produced and released, alongside a narrowing of the kinds of stories that are financed and distributed,” the document states. It emphasizes that a small group of powerful entities now dictates what content is produced and on what terms, leaving independent creators and businesses with fewer avenues to sustain their work.
The list of signatories is extensive, featuring prominent actors such as Bryan Cranston, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, Glenn Close, Javier Bardem, John Cusack, Lily Gladstone, Patti Lupone, Noah Wyle, Rose Byrne, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Tiffany Haddish, Marisa Tomei, Jason Bateman, Heather Graham, Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson, Rosario Dawson, Elliot Page, and Alyssa Milano. The movement also includes influential writers and directors like David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, Adam McKay, JJ Abrams, Daniel Kwan, David Chase, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Boots Riley.
Concerns Over Industry Integrity
Beyond the immediate impact on production, the letter warns that consolidation has already accelerated the disappearance of mid-budget films, the erosion of independent distribution, and the weakening of screen credit integrity. The authors suggest that the proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery deal prioritizes the interests of a select group of powerful stakeholders over the public good.
The letter concludes by acknowledging the ongoing scrutiny from various state attorneys general, including California’s Rob Bonta, who are investigating the merger and considering legal action to block it. The signatories expressed gratitude for this leadership, affirming their readiness to support efforts to preserve competition, protect jobs, and ensure a vibrant future for American culture and the industry at large.
Representatives for both Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have not yet provided a comment regarding the letter.
