Watch Charli XCX’s underwear-filled Grammys performance
Charli XCX took home her first-ever Grammy awards tonight–Best Dance Pop Recording for “Von Dutch” and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album and Best Recording Package for Brat–and she also gave one of the night’s most memorable performances. Following a pre-performance interview segment in which Charli promised to play the “least Grammy-appropriate songs,” she began a performance of “Von dutch” outside in the parking lot, wearing just underwear under an open coat, and tossing aside a glass of champagne, and it quickly turned into a garage dance party that felt more like a DIY rave than a Grammys performance. Finally, she entered the proper Grammys stage and went into “Guess,” and then turned the stage into an underwear party, complete with the song’s producer The Dare making out with someone, and her famous friend Julia Fox, who she wished a happy birthday to at the end. It was also revealed on screen that all unworn undergarments from the performance will be donated to survivors of domestic violence through the organization I Support The Girls. Watch her performance below.
Brat was also up for Album of the Year but lost to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, and “360” was up for Record of the Year but lost to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Outside of the main categories, “Apple” was up for Best Pop Solo Performance but lost to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” “Guess” with Billie Eilish was up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance but lost to Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile,” “360” was up for Best Music Video but lost to “Not Like Us,” and the “Von dutch” remix with A.G. Cook and Addison Rae was up for Best Remixed Recording but lost to the Mark Ronson x FNZ Working Late remix of “Espresso.”
