Vampire Weekend played “Hot To Go!”, and the memes followed
If you spend time on the music-friendly corners of social media, you’ve probably seen the meme where two people are at a show, and one person says “I hope they play ‘Hot To Go!’” and the other person rolls their eyes and says “this is a [insert non-Chappell Roan artist here] concert,” and then the camera turns to whatever non-Chappell Roan artist is playing. For example, St. Vincent and Beck did it with Slayer at Riot Fest:
@stvincentofficial are we doing this right? @Riot Fest 2024 #riotfest #hottogo ♬ original sound – St. Vincent
As Stereogum points out, Vampire Weekend have been doing impromptu, fan-request covers on their current tour, and at their Toronto show on Tuesday (9/24), one of the several requests they took was “Hot To Go!.” Naturally, the memes followed:
@yamtoks twas a rainy one tonight @Vampire Weekend #hottogo #chappellroan #vampireweekend ♬ original sound – yam
@valeriteresa I can’t believe I got @Vampire Weekend to do HOT TO GO! in Toronto tonight #hottogo #vampireweekend ♬ original sound – valeri

“I’ve heard Chappell Roan’s excellent music, don’t really know it that well,” Ezra Koenig told the crowd. “I’ll teach you!” someone yelled back, to which he replied, “What do you mean ‘I’ll teach you,’ is there like a dance?” Then the crowd did the song and dance. “This is amazing how many people in the crowd know it,” he said. Then the band did their best to play a few seconds of the song. “Looking out at this big crowd, I really appreciate that a percentage of the crowd is so dialed in on the ‘Hot To Go!,’” Ezra said, “and I just know another percentage of the crowd has no idea what that was.”
