Awesome Tapes From Africa announces debut LP from South African amapiano producer Teno Afrika

Awesome Tapes From Africa is releasing Teno Afrika’s first album later this month.

Amapiano Selections showcases a South African electronic music genre called amapiano, which surfaced in Gauteng province over the last five years, influenced by South African house, jazz, and kwaito music. The music, though increasing in popularity, is generally distributed with DIY methods via file sharing and self-releasing on social media.

Teno Afrika, real name Lutendo Raduvha, is a 19 year-old producer who has moved around Gauteng over his life, which the label says influences the LP’s diverse sound palette. Amapiano Selections touches on regional genres including diBacardi, gong gong amaiano and Harvard amapiano. While amapiano songs typically feature vocals, only one song on Raduvha’s LP includes vocals, with the instrumental approach meant to highlight his specific take on the genre.
