41 New Songs Out Today

Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

JOE ELY FT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – “ODDS OF THE BLUES”
Austin music legend Joe Ely will release new album Driven to Drive on August 2 and the first single features an old friend and collaborator, Bruce Springsteen. “I got the idea for the song from hanging out at an all-night after-hours joint on the edge of east Lubbock called TV’s,” says Joe. “There was always a dice game in the back room; the pool table had a bad lean; and the jukebox mainly played old blues songs. I wrote the song later when I put my studio together in Austin. I asked Bruce recently if he would like to sing with me on this song, and he said he’d love to. We’ve been long lost friends for a long time. One of my memories of us singing together was in Dublin, Ireland, when we both got on stage with Jerry Lee Lewis and Shane MacGowan and sang ‘Great Balls of Fire.’”

Los Angeles artist Pascal Stevenson has shared a new single as Fashion Club, “Rotten Mind,” featuring backing vocals from Julie byrne. “I’m trying my hardest to empathize with those people and just not getting there, which is something I deal with a lot: that attempt to let go of resentment and hatred for the world,” Stevenson says. “I think it’s posing the question to those people, ‘Is that really what you want? Or do you just want to see other people suffer because you feel like you’re suffering?’”

MUI ZYU – “PLEASE BE OK” FT. MISS GRIT
mui zyu has given us a final early taste of her second album, nothing or something to die for, ahead of its release this Friday. “‘please be ok’ means many things, it can be supportive, judgmental, mediocre, passable, fine (whatever that means), it can be good after bad, or bad after good, everything… or nothing – pure absurdity really,” she says. “When I started this song I wondered if it would be ok to ask Miss Grit to help with it, when they said ‘ok’, I thought ‘ok this is the best news’. They brought all sorts of magic to the song and production making it extra special (which is more than ok).”

Examining an emotion carefully and questioning it, seeking to understand where it came from, what it is, and why it’s here, in an attempt to better know myself.”

Spring Silver (aka K Nkanza) has shared “Another Perfect Day, Another Perfect Night,” a fuzzed-out indie rock song that they say this about: “Everyone is more or less selling an idea of themselves, a slightly (or more than slightly haha) fictionalized version of themselves. I’m not sure when I first came up with the lyrics and melody; but once they were in my head, I couldn’t get rid of them. So I figured, I have no choice but to use this really saccharine sounding hook in a song.”

PARSNIP – “THE BABBLE”
“I wanted ‘The Babble to sound like a ‘Dead End Street’ style Kinks song,” says Parsnip’s Stella Rennex. “However a few people have commented that it sounds like a Dandy Warhols riff which I don’t mind because I am a fan. I also asked Mikey to take it in the direction of the outro of ‘7 and 7 Is’ by Love and he did a great job, the explosion preceding a little ditty played inside a tin can floating out to sea.” This is from Parsnip’s new album Behold.

BEEN STELLAR – “PUMPKIN”
NYC band Been Stellar release their debut album in June and here’s another preview. “This song is somewhat of a sonic departure for us — it’s definitely more subdued,” says lead singer Sam Slocum. “There was a point when we weren’t totally sure it would make it onto the album because of that. It had existed in many forms, but it wasn’t until the last month leading up to recording when each part fell into place. Oddly, the lyrics remained the same from the very beginning. They stemmed from a visual I had: an apartment light shining through its windows out onto a street at night. I imagined the people inside the apartment crossing back and forth in front of the window. From there, the lyrics I wrote formed a vignette of the people in the apartment, sharing a space together. I described several shared, intimate moments from my own life— I wanted to get as specific as I could.”

RJD2 – “CATCH THE EXIT DOOR”
“If you’re familiar with the idea of synesthesia, then you have probably heard of people experiencing sounds as colors,” says RJD2 of the new single from his upcoming album Visions Out Of Limelight. “I often have a similar experience with rhythm and geometry. Rhythmic patterns feel like shapes to me. If you know the satisfaction of a great move in Tetris, that is the closest approximation I can provide to how I feel when putting just the right rhythmic patterns together. ‘Catch The Exit Door’ is in many ways entirely built on this concept.”

NICE BISCUIT – “RAIN”
Aussie band Nice Biscuit are back with “Rain,” their first new music in three years. It’s nicely splits the difference between guitar psych and dance music. Say the band:”We began to work on ‘Rain’ again after a catastrophic flooding event occurred in Meanjin (Brisbane) in 2022, after weeks of constant rain. We felt trapped in this feeling of helplessness. The song then became a reflection of the psychological impacts of climate change, where you are at first wishing for rain and then begging for it to stop. We changed the lyrics to reflect this, alternating between ‘stop the rain’ and ‘please don’t stop the rain’. We live in a system where action to mitigate climate change is ignored – so in this song we imagined a rainbow ‘cracking through the concrete’ to break free from the shackles of the system to bring change and… the rain. It’s a positive take on a situation that can make us feel powerless – to encourage us to keep going and to not lose hope when everything is uncertain.”
