Ariana Grande Haunts Justin Long in ‘Hate That I Made You Love Me’ Video
They say you cannot kill a good thing, and that is certainly the case in Ariana Grande’s new video for her latest single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which co-stars actor Justin Long.
The clip, directed by Christian Breslauer, leans into a darkly comedic narrative. It opens with Long’s character filling in a grave, ostensibly burying Grande’s character. However, the plot takes a supernatural turn as she appears in the back of his car and then suddenly in front of it, forcing him to veer off the road. Grande taunts him through the fiery crash, singing, “Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me,” as the vehicle bursts into flames. “Sorry if I made me your type.”
While Long manages to walk away from that initial accident, he finds no respite from the haunting. In a wild slapstick sequence, Long attempts to toss old mementos into a fireplace, only to catch on fire himself. He survives that ordeal—albeit looking a bit worse for wear—and stumbles into a diner where every patron is revealed to be Grande. Driven to the brink of madness, Long returns to the scene of the crime, descends into the pit he originally dug, and looks up to see Grande standing over him with a shovel.
Grande released “Hate That I Made You Love Me” last Friday, marking the first offering from her upcoming album, Petal. The track was produced by her longtime collaborator Ilya, alongside legendary producer Max Martin.
Little else is known about Petal, which is currently scheduled for release on July 31. Grande co-wrote and executive produced the album with Ilya, and she has previously described the record as “a little feral.” In a recent social media post, she noted, “It’s definitely from a place where I have been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before. This kind of just feels like, fuck it.”
Prior to the release of Petal, Grande will embark on her Eternal Sunshine tour. The run is set to begin on June 6 in Oakland and will conclude on August 5 in Chicago.
