John Mulaney Postpones Minneapolis Shows After Fatal ICE Shooting: ‘The Situation Is So Unsafe’
‘Heartbreaking’
“It doesn’t sit right with me to put anyone at risk,” wrote the comedian in a post a day after the killing of Renee Nicole Good
John Mulaney has cancelled his upcoming shows at the Armory in Minneapolis this weekend following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by a masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on Wednesday.
The comedian shared his statement on social media Thursday evening, writing, “What’s happening in your city is heartbreaking. I hate to postpone shows in a town going through such awful challenges and such grief, because it feels unfair to the audience.” Mulaney continued, saying that he doesn’t “feel comfortable asking thousands of people each night to leave their homes, gather at the venue, and then make their way home when the situation is so unsafe.”
He noted that tickets for this weekend’s show would be honored for the respective days of Friday through Sunday on April 10, 11, and 12. Mulaney also asked that fans reach out to their point of purchase or Ticketmaster for any questions or refunds.
“I am sorry to anyone who is disappointed,” Mulaney said in his message. “I know a fun stand-up show could be a nice distraction, but it doesn’t sit right with me to put anyone at risk.”
Protests have erupted in cities across the country following the killing of Good, who had just dropped her six-year-old son off at school in Minneapolis. The 37-year old U.S. citizen was an award-winning poet and a mother to two other children who had only recently moved to the Twin Cities. The tragedy occurred one day after the Trump administration deployed thousands of federal agents to Minnesota for a 30-day immigration enforcement “surge.”
At a press conference, Mayor Jacob Frey accused ICE of “sowing chaos on our streets” and “literally killing people.” “There’s little I can say again that’ll make this situation better, but I do have a message for our community, for our city — and I have a message for ICE,” Frey said. “To ICE: Get the fuck out of Minneapolis.”
