The State Of Maddix

The tail end of 2021 and the first month of this year has been quite intriguing for Maddix, who remember, is transitioning into an experimental Techno state from his previously dirty Dutch Big Room era. Beforehand, I stated my mixed feelings towards his newer attempts although the evolution had caught my ears, knowing he is immensely talented. Well, it’s time to draw some conclusions! Let’s focus on the last three releases from the Dutch persona’s discography: the newly released “Advanced” remix for the veteran Marcel Woods (fun fact: he has two Revealed releases from 2012, one with a young duo, W&W) and two preceding 2021 successes, “Different State” and “A State Of Mind”.

So, my observation is: Maddix is slowly budging towards a Trance/Techno hybrid that contains the faster pace from the “Festival/Rave” era and the peculiar Tech elements he’s creatively embedding. This is evident in the rather melodic drop of the above-mentioned remix, in some parts of “State Of Mind” and partially in “Different States” architecture. I appreciated these dynamic productions more than the previous efforts, and believe that it fits better with the persona rather than pure “Techno” presentation from the last couple of years.

Maddix clearly chose to enter a risky territory (even changing to an entirely different Studio One and leaving behind FL Studio, his former DAW of choice), clearly seeking his independent path without resorting to any collaborative assistance. I am curious to know if he ever plans to do team-ups once he is settled into this innovative zone, solidifying his results.

There happens to be a precedent for this case: A fellow native going by the alias of Julian Calor, who peaked in 2015 with spectacular hits such as “Cell”, “Typhoon” and “Power” and then spent years alone developing his indie project, rehearsed solo with Trap and Electro House; a few years later, he’s a regular at STMPD with interesting releases. Revealed didn’t make the same mistake to Maddix, supporting his journey throughout and giving the niche for his releases and albums, yet I wouldn’t be surprised if he conceives a Techno/Trance sub-label, à la “Crash and Smile.

Now that the Netherlands-based act has found a good fit for his intricate musical personality (at least, in my personal opinion), his upcoming steps will be getting my undivided attention. More synergies? A sub-label? Another evolution? Plenty of possibilities indeed!
