Weezer Announces New Self-Titled Album and Shares ‘We Might As Well Be Strangers’
It is officially Weezer Wednesday. The band has officially previewed its upcoming studio album, Weezer, set for release on Aug. 21. The announcement arrives alongside the debut of the record’s latest single, “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” which features guest vocals from Wednesday‘s Karly Hartzman. This track follows the release of the album’s lead single, “Shine Again,” which premiered in April.
“Plated in what surface instruments call gold. It bears the name Weezer. Its surface is marked by four symbols believed to represent its creators,” the band shared on Instagram in a caption accompanying the album’s striking gold cover art. “Carry it with you to the Gathering, and witness what follows.”
The 10-track collection marks Weezer’s first full-length LP in five years, following 2021’s Van Weezer. For this project, the band enlisted producers Klas Ahlund and Kenneth Blume, who reportedly aimed to craft “the most violent Weezer album ever.” The record promises to balance a reflection on the band’s storied legacy with a forward-looking perspective, themes that will be further explored during their upcoming Weezer: The Gathering Tour, which kicks off in September.
In February, frontman Rivers Cuomo confirmed via the band’s Discord channel that recording for the project had concluded. Longtime fans may recognize elements of the new material; for instance, the track “Up in the Clouds” originated as a demo during the sessions for 2014’s Everything Will Be Alright in the End.
Cuomo has previously teased that the album would feature a song titled “CEO,” which he described as a meta-sequel to their classic hit “The Sweater Song.” With the new album and tour on the horizon, the band continues to build momentum, following a busy period that included work on a potential Weezer film project.
