Saosin “hoping to have new music out by the end of the year”
Saosin founding guitarist and songwriter Beau Burchell joined us on the BrooklynVegan podcast for a career-spanning interview that ranges from the pre-Saosin days to the band’s upcoming live album, upcoming tour, and new music. Beau says the band has been working on their first new album since 2016’s Along the Shadow, and it sounds like we might get to hear some new music this year.
“We’re hoping to… our goal right now is to have new music out by the end of the year,” he says. “So we’ll see how that goes. The problem is, so Chris is a professional videographer and photographer, and I produce and mix records, so between our two schedules we have like zero time. So we have to actively schedule vacation time in order to finish an album, or to work on music. Because otherwise the works just keeps coming in and then next thing you know, five years go by and it’s like, ‘Yeah we should probably get around to making an album!’ It’s very difficult for us to set aside the time to do it.”
“I’m always writing songs,” he said. “Like right now, we’ve got something like 35 songs for this new album that we’re working on. We always have the songs, it’s just a matter of: can someone come in and sing on them?”
As for who will sing on them, both Saosin lead singers Anthony Green and Cove Reber might be options. Anthony had been back with the band since 2014, and Cove made a surprise return at the 20th anniversary shows last year (the ones recorded for the new live album), and he’s singing for them on their upcoming tour. So, are both currently in the band?
“We don’t know,” Beau says. “I’ll tell you what, there’s been no talks of hiring or firing anyone. I had kind of joked on my Twitch stream that we are singer-fluid, and then I saw recent someone on our team had updated our Instagram to be like ‘Member Fluid since [2003].’”
“I would love to do a song–like Killswitch Engage did the song with Jesse and Howard–I would love to do something like that, if we can find a way to do a song that kind of fits both of their styles together,” he adds. “I think that would be awesome. I know that’s kind of in the back of my mind right now.”
