Streamland picks: Mafalda, Flying Lotus, Source Direct

Two months into lockdown, Streamland has become a gateway to everything from a star-studded tribute to Manchester’s Hacienda to an acid house pub quiz, a much-needed reminder of the resilience and creativity of hundreds of local scenes.

Get your weekend started right with the respected London selector Mafalda. The Melodies International affiliate has a deep knowledge of the best in soulful, heartfelt tunes, spanning from soul 45s to old-school hip-hop. She’ll be streaming as part of Brooklyn Sound’s concert series starting this afternoon at 3 PM EDT. The event also allows listeners to chat and chip in for the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation. São Paulo’s infamous techno crew Mamba Negra is taking over the HOUSE OF MARICAS platform Friday night. A roundtable discussion of COVID-19’s impact on the Brazilian scene will lead up to a set from Cashu. If you’re quarantining down under, Francis Inferno Orchestra will sort you out with a mix of dubby disco, house, post-punk and whatever else he feels like playing for Vice Australia’s live streaming series VICEOLATION.

In happier times, LEAVING Records’ free outdoor concert series Listen To Music Outside In The Daylight Under A Tree served as a vital, low-key showcase of the rich Los Angeles experimental scene (Simon Reynolds covered the series in his end-of-decade essay on the return of ambient and New Age). They’ve kept the series going strong in isolation, and this Saturday’s edition, starting at 1 PM PDT, features none other than Brainfeeder head Flying Lotus.

The great thing about Streamland is you can start out at Flying Lotus’s home studio and end up on a rooftop in Bergen, Norway instantaneously. Fans of disco, house and cosmic music generally should lock into Vill Vill Vest‘s rooftop broadcast featuring a couple of Norwegian lynchpins—Skatebård and Bjørn Torske. What better warm up for the virtual rave than a pub quiz—and a pub quiz about acid house, at that? Posthuman, Nightwave and Kerrie will grill punters on the little acid box that could.

Saturday night’s raving options are, quite frankly, ridiculous. 24-hour party people should check out the second edition of The Hacienda House Party, which features a lineup without whom dance music wouldn’t be possible—Kevin Saunderson, DJ Pierre, New Order’s Peter Hook, Danny Tenaglia and Arthur Baker are among those paying tribute to the foundational Manchester club.

Drum & bass heads, your moment has come—Percolate‘s Queen’s Yard Streaming Party will be headlined by Source Direct. Elsewhere, NYC gay party icons The Carry Nation host their May Moment party, Nowadays keeps the virtual party rocking with Kush Jones, DJ SWISHA and Umfang and Erika returns to the source with an eight-hour set for The Bunker New York. If you squint your eyes or imbibe in just the right manner, you could be party-hopping in Bushwick.

Optimo (Espacio)‘s JD Twitch has been pulling together Tranquility Mixes that accomplish their purpose as perfect lockdown listening, but one assumes that he’ll be in dance floor mode for his headlining slot at All Night Passion & Rare: May Day Live on Sunday. The Glaswegian legend is joined by the likes of Hot Mass’s Jarrett Tebbets and Liam Doc.
