Yo La Tengo had MJ Lenderman, Steve Shelley & more at Hanukkah 2024 Night 5 (pics, setlist)
How do you follow Hanukkah Night 4’s Soft Boys reunion? By getting the maker of one of 2024’s best albums to open for you and have a member of Sonic Youth join you for your main set. A lot of people hoped/guessed (including us) that MJ Lenderman might make an appearance sometime during Yo La Tengo‘s Hanukkah run this year and Sunday night it happened with full band in tow. What a treat.
MJ also made an appearance during Yo La Tengo’s main set to sing Bob Dylan’s “Something There Is About You.” As usual there was a collaborator with them for the whole show and Sunday night it was Sonic Youth‘s Steve Shelley on a second drum kit. YLT started things on Sunday with “You Are Here” which melted straight into “Ohm” and “The Ballad of Red Buckets.” Their set also included “Deeper Into Movies,” “Let’s Do it Wrong,” “The Last Days of Disco,” and more wrapping things up with the one-two punch of “Sugarcube” and “Mushroom Cloud of Hiss.”
For the encore, Yo La Tengo welcomed NRBQ‘s Joey Spampinato and his wife Kami Lyle to perform NRBQ’s “Christmas Wish” and “What Can I Say” as well as Lyle’s “Mambo” and Rodgers & Hart’s “I Could Write a Book” from their musical Pal Joey.
Jay Jurden was the Night 5 comedian, the mix CD was by Kendraplex, and proceeds from the show went to Brigid Alliance.
