Wilco played deep cuts, Jason Isbell covered R.E.M. & more from day 1 of Solid Sound 2024 (pics, video)
Wilco‘s Sold Sound Festival returned to North Adams, MA’s MASS MoCA over the weekend for its first edition since 2022. Things kicked off on Friday (6/28), which included Wilco’s first performance of the fest, a “deep cuts” set which saw them reaching back into their discography for a few live debuts — “Venus Stopped the Train” (one of the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Demos, which Jeff has played solo but not with Wilco), “Quiet Amplifier” from 2019’s Ode To Joy, and 2020 benefit single “Tell Your Friends.”
They also played a bunch of songs for the first time in years, including “One Sunday Morning,” “Message From Mid-Bar,” “Feed of Man,” “Deeper Down,” “Blue Eyed Soul,” “Sonny Feeling,” “Panthers,” “Camera,” “Dark Neon,” “More Like the Moon,” “ELT,” “Bob Dylan’s 49th Beard,” “Just Say Goodbye,” “Let’s Not Get Carried Away,” and “Just a Kid.” “This is the only place we could try something like this,” Jeff Tweedy told the crowd, “play 20-some songs we haven’t played in 20 years.” See their Friday setlist and attendee-taken video from their set below.
Friday at Solid Sound also featured Horsegirl, Courtney Marie Andrews, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit (who covered R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” – video of that is below), Horse Lords, a DJ set from Sylvan Esso (who were also joined by their dog), and a live interview with Tweedy and Song Exploder podcast host Hrishikesh Hirway.
Several artists did “pop-up sets” in addition to their scheduled sets in the courtyards, Joe’s Field, and Club B.10, including Courtney Marie Andrews, who brought out Jeff for a rendition of Wilco’s “You and I” for a set in a gallery, and Mikael Jorgensen, who gave a talk about life on tour with funny anecdotes that he repeated another day.
Prolific indie rock artist Steve Keene was also on hand at Mass MoCA, painting and selling new work, including all of Wilco’s album covers (those sold out very quickly), scenic views of the museum, and more. He also had some of his iconic album covers on display from a private collection.
Famed courtroom sketch artist Elizabeth Williams, who has previously done live art at Tweedy’s Brooklyn Made solo shows in 2023, was also invited to the festival to sketch once again, and her drawings were available for purchase at the merch booth, alongside a wide variety of other merch, much of which you can see below. Wilco’s new EP, Hot Sun Cool Shroud, which came out on Friday, was among the options on offer, and they encouraged purchasers to decorate their copies and submit them for consideration for future pressings of the record.
