After playing a set of deep cuts at day one of their 2024 Solid Sound Festival at Mass MoCA on Friday, Wilco had more surprises in store for their second set of the festival on Saturday. Their fifth LP A Ghost is Born turned 20 on June 22, and they celebrated on Saturday (a week later) by playing it in full from beginning to end. They started their set with songs from throughout their discography, including the live debuts of “Annihilation” and “Say You Love Me” from their new EP Hot Sun Cool Shroud, and then launched into “At Least That’s What You Said,” with the rest of the album to follow. They left the stage during the noise jam on “Less Than You Think,” and came back out to play “The Late Greats” and a few other favorites. Our Saturday at Solid Sound started with a set from Fenne Lily, and also included Ratboys (whose Julia Steiner also did a solo pop-up set later in the day); Joanna Sternberg (who brought out Mary Lou Lord); a comedy set with John Hodgman, Jean Grae, Brittany Carney, and Dave Hill (who was joined by Mikael Jorgensen); Young Fresh Fellows (two days after their first NYC show in 23 years); Soul Glo; a Substack interview with Jeff and Spencer Tweedy; Hailu Mergia; Etran De L’Aïr; Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets; Water From Your Eyes (who brought out Jeff on “When You’re Around” – watch video below); and Dry Cleaning (who brought out Nels Cline on “Conversation”).
