Watch Neil Young & Stephen Stills play a Buffalo Springfield rarity for the first time in 50+ years

Harvest Moon, Neil Young and Stephen Stills‘ benefit show for The Painted Turtle and The Bridge School, happened at The Painted Turtle’s Lake Hughes, CA campsite on Saturday (10/5), and Stills and Young teamed up for their set. They played some Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Buffalo Springfield classics, and they also dusted off the latter’s “Hung Upside Down,” which neither had performed in over 50 years, since 1967.

“The worst four words you can hear in a live performance are ‘here’s a new song,’” Stills said, introducing the song. “But this is actually a new version of an old song that took two centuries to write. It’s called ‘Hung Upside Down.’” Watch attendee-taken video of that below.

Lily Meola sang harmonies on “Heart of Gold,” “Harvest Moon,” and “For What It’s Worth,” and she and John Mayer (who also played his own set at the event) joined in for the final song of the encore, “Rockin’ in the Free World.” See the setlist and more attendee-taken video below.

Neil also played Farm Aid and a pair of Port Chester, NY shows at Capitol Theatre last month. He’d discussed plans for an East Coast theater tour recently too, after the cancellation of the remainder of his tour with Crazy Horse, but those dates are still to be announced.
