Unsound announces online panel on LGBTQIA+ rights in Poland with Avtomat, Ewa Majewska
Following last year’s panel on Polish clubbing and the LGBTQIA+ community at Unsound 2019, the festival is partnering with Resident Advisor to host a second discussion unpacking events since then. Hosted by journalist Kamila Rymajdo, the talk will include Oramics’ Avtomat, performance art dramaturge and curator Mateusz Szymanówka, philosopher Ewa Majewska and activist/filmmaker Bart Staszewski. By inviting emerging activists from varying disciplines, the panel aims to create space for different scenes to compare notes and form alliances.
The talk will explore the ways a mixture of performative, artistic and club-rooted practices can help amplify the movement in Poland, as well as the importance for exchanges between Western European queer activist movements and those in countries like Poland, Belarus and Ukraine.
The panel comes in the wake of the arrest of Avtomat and many others who were protesting the arrest of Stop Bzdurom (“Stop Bullshit”) member Margot Szutowicz, who’s awaiting sentencing in jail for posing with a rainbow flag on the Jesus Christ monument. Unprovoked police interventions such as this are indicative of rising tensions between government, citizens and local LGBTQIA+ communities following an aggressive presidential campaign by the country’s right-wing populist party Law and Justice this past July.
The talk will be streamed live from our Facebook and YouTube channels from 7 PM CEST.
