Stevie Nicks releases reproductive rights protest song, “The Lighthouse”

Fleetwood Mac are officially done, but Stevie Nicks remains active as a solo artist, and she just released a new single, “The Lighthouse.” It sounds like classic Stevie Nicks, and it’s a protest song that she wrote after Roe v. Wade was overturned. “It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘what can we, as a collective force, do about this…,’” Stevie says. “For me, it was to write a song.” She continues:

It took a while because I was on the road. Then early one morning I was watching the news on TV and a certain newscaster said something that felt like she was talking to me ~ explaining what the loss of Roe v Wade would come to mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.

That was September 6, 2022. I have been working on it ever since. I have often said to myself, “This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men that love them.

This is an anthem.

The song is streaming everywhere now.

“The Lighthouse” is Stevie’s first single since her 2022 cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and her first original new song since 2020’s “Show Them The Way,” which was also a protest song. She hasn’t released an album since 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, which featured new versions of songs that she had previously demoed between the ’60s and the ’90s. Her most recent album of entirely new music is 2011’s In Your Dreams.

Stevie will also be performing on Saturday Night Live on October 12 with host Ariana Grande. It’ll mark Stevie’s first time performing on SNL since 1983.
