Mount Kimbie wrapped up their tour at Webster Hall w/ Chanel Beads (pics, setlist)

Over the last decade, Mount Kimbie have transformed from a forward-thinking electronic duo into an impressive, forward-thinking, electronic indie rock band. They put on a terrific show at Webster Hall on Wednesday night, which was the final date of their North American tour. The show was sold out and packed to the gills, and the crowd was really there for it. Any time I needed a lift I looked up to the balcony to watch one particularly enthusiastic fan pump their first and shout along like it was a metal or punk show.

Playing as a five-piece almost always in silhouette, Mount Kimbie focused mainly on this year’s The Sunset Violent and 2017’s Love What Survives. They are still mostly electronic — Kai Campos played guitar about 1/3 of the time, and their drummer used a lot of synth pads — but there wasn’t a laptop in sight. Live, their songs come off like an amalgam of My Bloody Valentine, Tangerine Dream, and Stereolab if produced by ’80s Trevor Horn. Everything gleamed, albeit at odd angles, and with that distinctive London vibe (and accent) they have.

After finishing their main set with “Blue Train Lines,” they returned for a two-song encore. Dominic Maker thanked the crowd for ending their tour on such a high and promised they’d be back soon. For the encore they played “Empty and Silent” and then finished with Cold Spring Fault Less Youth‘s atmospheric “Made to Stray” before sending us out with warm vibes on a drizzly May night.

Chanel Beads (who I missed) opened the night. Check out photos by Ryan Muir and the setlist from Webster Hall below.

Mount Kimbie are currently on their way to Barcelona to play Primavera Sound.
