Margaret Glaspy’s favorite things she listened to in 2023

Margaret Glaspy released her third album, Echo the Diamond, in August; stream it below. With 2023 almost over, we’ve been asking artists about their favorite music of the year, and Margaret made us a list of albums she listened to and loved that didn’t come out this year. Read it, and her commentary, below.

Dijon – Absolutely
I love the energy and feeling of this record. I am a big Dijon fan and I’m excited to see them live someday.

Molly Drake – The Tide‘s Magnificence: Songs and Poems of Molly Drake
I have found myself listening to this record on rainy days. Her songwriting and her voice are truly one of a kind.

PJ Harvey – Rid of Me
A classic. This year, I have fully dove into PJ Harvey’s catalog and I am just so knocked out by this record. At times, while on tour, I would listen to this record before going on stage. It inspires me to give everything I have.

Julian Lage – View With a Room
I had the honor of producing this record, so I am biased. The cool thing about producing Julian is that he is such an inspired and soulful musician – it is not hard to make a record with him.

Aretha Franklin – Aretha Now
This record will forever be playing in my house, in my car, in my headphones – wherever I can get it. She is the greatest singer of all time and I love these performances.

The Raincoats – The Raincoats
This record has been an awesome discovery this year. I was familiar with a song or two from The Raincoats, but getting to know this record has been a fun education.

Spoon – Lucifer on the Sofa
I had the pleasure of touring with Spoon last year and it was so fun to bask in their music every night. They were promoting this record on that tour and it has really stuck with me ever since.

Kendrick Lamar – Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers
I love listening to lyricists really tell stories and I love Kendrick Lamar’s storytelling. He is such a brilliant songwriter and I love letting his records wash over me. This one is full to the brim.

Bob Dylan – Shot of Love
I recently took part in a Bob Dylan tribute show produced by T Bone Burnett and the experience was a real thrill. I got deeper into his catalogue and ‘Shot of Love’ became a favorite of mine.

Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation
I love this record.
