Mana named his new album after an iconic, meaningless phrase from Fellini's 8 1/2

Mana’s latest album, Asa Nisi Masa, is out on Hyperdub in September.

Its Daniele Mana’s second album in as many years for Kode9’s label, following 2019’s Seven Steps Behind. The Italian artist recorded the 12-track record late last year up through May 2020, mostly during quarantine.

He took the title from the iconic nonsense phrase Asa Nisi Masa, from Federico Fellini’s 1963 film . Musically, it looks back to Italian classical and soundtrack music of the ’70s and ’80s, Jon Hassell’s groundbreaking Fourth World experiments and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s 2017 album async.

Listen to the opening track, “Spin And Loops.”
