Lewis Capaldi’s Penn Station Pop-Up Show Interrupted by NYPD

Lewis Capaldi’s attempt to host an intimate, impromptu performance for his fans in New York’s Penn Station on Thursday afternoon (April 16) took an unexpected turn when the NYPD intervened to shut down the event. The singer, who was in the city ahead of his headline show at Madison Square Garden, found that his plans for a low-key fan gathering were quickly thwarted by local law enforcement.

Capaldi addressed the incident with his characteristic humor on X, joking that the “NYPD truly met their match in the form of a crowd of mild-mannered ‘middle of the road’ pop music fans.” He accompanied the post with a video showing a massive crowd packing the station, singing along to his 2020 hit “Before You Go” while accompanied by a piano, just moments before officers began navigating the crowd to disperse the gathering.

In another clip from the surprise performance, which took place in front of a flower shop, Capaldi delivered a moving rendition of his 2023 track “How I’m Feeling Now.” During the event, members of his team distributed single-stem flowers to the attendees, many of whom carried the tokens with them to his later performance at Madison Square Garden.

The pop-up also served as a platform for Capaldi to perform his yearning new single, “Stay Love,” his first release following his 2025 EP Survive. The singer recently confirmed that he was the artist behind the “mystery” vinyl stunt that appeared in U.K. and U.S. stores leading up to Record Store Day. The plain white sleeves, which featured pitched-down vocals and no artist identification, had sparked widespread speculation among fans who correctly identified the vocal inflection and romantic themes as Capaldi’s signature style.

According to a statement from his label, the event—which featured the distribution of flowers with “Stay Love” notes attached—drew a crowd of over 5,000 people, effectively transforming the iconic New York City landmark into a cavernous music hall. Produced by The Monsters & Strangerz and Michael Pollack, “Stay Love” is set to appear on the deluxe edition of the Survive EP.

Capaldi is scheduled to continue his tour with a headline show at the MGM Music Hall in Boston on Saturday night (April 18).
