Jesse Malin returned to the stage w/ Elvis Costello, J Mascis & more at Beacon Theatre (pics, video, setlist)
A year and a half after he suffered from a rare spinal-cord stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down, Jesse Malin made his official return to the stage with the first of a pair of guest-filled hometown NYC shows at Beacon Theatre on Sunday night (12/1). While he sat in a chair for some of the night, he also intermittently stood (with his mic stand helping him up) during the show, and walked with a walker, as he performed covers of The Pogues (“If I Should Fall From Grace with God”), The Rolling Stones (“Sway”), Ramones (“Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?”), as well as his recent single “Argentina” and lots more.
Sunday night’s guests (some of whom performed their covers from this year’s benefit album Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin) included Elvis Costello, Alejandro Escovedo, Rickie Lee Jones, J Mascis, Danny Clinch, Jakob Dylan of The Wallflowers, Butch Walker, Adam Durtiz of Counting Crows, Lucinda Williams, Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, and more. There’s a second show tonight (12/2) at Beacon Theatre with some of the same guests, and some new ones, including Lucinda Williams, The Hold Steady, J Mascis, Adam Durtiz, David Immy, Butch Walker, Willie Nile, Tommy Stinson, Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie, and more. Proceeds go to Jesse’s medical care via his Sweet Relief artist fund.
