Halloween, but phonky!
TikTok is back at it again.
It is abundantly clear that the social media platform is dominating in terms of trendsetting new styles of music. Think of it, and there are massive examples such as Lil Nas X, sea shanties, Slap House, and dozens of hits that erupted into virality from the short videos in the past year… and now it’s phonk.
It’s still hard to hold out an olive branch for the subgenre, which fuses a grittier atmosphere with hefty basslines and trap/house influences with vocals and percussions. Lots of chops in there too.
Personally, new trends are a refreshing change of pace especially if they are creatively done from day one. There are tons of synergies between Trap and Bass House, only time will provide a definite answer as to its evolution.
For now, let me introduce two songs of a similar title, made by different artists with common end goals. These are Cryjaxx (Tribal Trap) and Razihel & MXRCVRY (Spinnin’). We have already mentioned the former in our previous Roundup, yet there are resemblances between the two, with the latter introducing a genuine way of slowly distorting the pitch and making it unsettling to listen. I wasn’t familiar with the genre on hand, and R&M really made a magical impression: I was at a loss for words!

Cryjaxx, on the other hand, are a mainstay in the trap genre and left a lot of recognizable traces so their idea was a tad predictable. Nevertheless, it’s a great pick for the eerie season!

So, phonk is currently a new seed that will quickly gather attention in the EDM community, that’s for certain. Instead of Dannic’s Fonk, which had a splendid opportunity for jumping on the bandwagon, Spinnin’s Records seems to be focusing on it. That being said, a happy Halloween to everyone!
