Domenique Dumont reveals new album, People On Sunday

Domenique Dumont‘s next album is a soundtrack to People On Sunday, a German silent film from 1930.

Otherwise known as Menschen am Sonntag, the film based on a screenplay by Billy Wilder was shown at the French festival Les Arcs Film Festival in December 2019 with Dumont commissioned to score and perform live for the screening. The result explores Dumont’s interests in classical music, library music and early electronic experiments, according to the press release.

“The main challenge for me when working with a movie this old was to find a sweet spot in the sound so it doesn’t become a pastiche of retro and at the same time is in harmony with the film,” Dumont explains, saying that he kept pushing the sound towards “more simple forms” and calling the resulting album “my ode to sine waves.”

People On Sunday follows Dumont’s two previous LPs, Miniatures De Auto Rhythm and Comme Ça, and sees him depart from Antinote for the first time to release on Leeds imprint The Leaf Label.
