Dave Grohl suffers wrath of Swifties after “we actually play live” comment

At the Foo Fighters‘ show at London Stadium on Saturday night (6/22), Dave Grohl said on stage that “you don’t want to suffer the wrath of Taylor Swift,” but judging by social media today, he’s already suffering the wrath of Swifties. He made a reference to Taylor’s Eras Tour, which also hit London this weekend, and joked that the Foo Fighters are on their “Errors Tour.”

“We’ve had more than a few eras, and more than a few fucking errors as well,” he said. “Just a couple. That’s because we actually play live. Whaaaat? Just saying. We’ve a live band! You guys like raw, live rock ‘n’ roll music, right? You came to the right fucking place.”

It seems totally possible that Dave didn’t mean it as seriously as some are taking it, and it wasn’t that long ago that Dave publicly praised Taylor Swift. He said she saved him from embarrassment when he was high at a Paul McCartney party by playing the Foo Fighters’ “Best of You” on piano–an instrument Dave doesn’t play–so he could sing it. (Paul, meanwhile, was at Taylor’s show in London, and so was the Foo Fighters’ Pat Smear.) Dave has also been known to make poptimist comments in the past. In 2014, he said Lorde “represented the Nirvana aesthetic,” and in 2022 he said Billie Eilish is “rock & roll to me” and “started a revolution.” If he was in fact taking a dig at Taylor, some have suggested that perhaps it has something to do with his daughter Violet allegedly facing harassment from Taylor’s fanbase on social media after posting a tweet criticizing the pop singer for flying a private jet.

Taylor hasn’t directly responded to Dave Grohl yet, but she did thank her band on stage at Sunday’s (6/23) show for “playing live for you for three and a half hours.”

The video going around of Dave Grohl starts mid-quote, so there might be some context missing, but here it is, along with Taylor’s comment and some related viral social media posts:
