28 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
CHASTITY BELT – “CHEMTRAILS”
“’Chemtrails’ started off as a jam when we were rehearsing for an upcoming tour,” says Chastity Belt’s Julia Shapiro of their new single. “I started playing that initial lead guitar part without thinking, and the rest came together pretty naturally after that. Gretchen’s drums along with Annie’s bass really drive the song – the drums remind me a bit of Protomartyr (love those boys!), and Lydia’s lead guitar line in the chorus is very rock n roll. The lyrics are about not being able to let go of things and retracing memories in your head. I reached out to Ertuğrul Yaka about animating something to the song because his work is often pretty dark and introspective, and he came up with a video that really fits the vibe.” Chastity Belt’s new album Live Laugh Love is out March 29.

NICK CAVE – “LA VIE EN ROSE” (EDITH PIAF COVER)
Nick Cave’s new rendition of Edith Piaf’s classic signature song is from the Jack Antonoff-curated and producted soundtrack to the new Apple TV+ series The New Look.

SAICOBAB (FEAT. YOSHIMIO) – “NRTYAMAN”
Japanese group SAICOBAB have shared another track off their upcoming album NRTYA that’s out March 22 via Thrill Jockey. Adding to the freaky intensity and awesomeness of “Nrytyaman” is the acrobatic vocal performance by Boredoms’ YoshimiO.

FRED AGAIN.. X LIL YACHTY X OVERMONO – “STAYINIT”
After debuting the song at Knockdown Center earlier this month, Fred again.. has shared the studio version of his new single with Lil Yachty and Overmono.

CLOTHING (AKAASH ISRANI & BEN STERLING)- “KINGDOM (FEAT. AMBER COFFMAN)”
Aakaash Israni (Dawn of Midi) and Ben Sterling (Cookies, Mobius Band) have been friends for over a decade but just started making music together in earnest. “Kingdom” is their debut single as Clothing and it features vocals from onetine Dirty Projectors vocalist Amber Coffman. The track may start like typical neo-R&B but it quickly blossoms into something more.

JULIA HOLTER – “EVENING MOOD”
“I was inspired by the transformability of creatures, and how this malleability works alongside our capacity for love. I wanted everything to feel very liquid,” Julia Holter says of the latest single off her new album Something In The Room She Moves. It features a “heavily filtered ultrasound heartbeat” sent through a phaser, and she says, “I wanted it to sound like it was inside the body.”

THEEE KEVIN ALVIR – “BEAST MODE”
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten new music from Kevin Alvir (The Hairs, Lil Hospital) and “beASt MOdE” is a winning low-fi earworm.

GGLUM – “EATING RUST”
“Eating Rust” was “the first song I made while writing the album that felt like it summed up the album’s sound for me,” gglum says of the latest single off her debut album. “It’s all about a period of my life where I was desperate for one person’s love and approval which I would never get (yet i’d keep on trying anyway). It’s about what inspired the dream that inspired the album.” The Garden Dream is out next month via Secretly Canadian.

ALENA SPANGER – “ALL THAT I WANTED”
Brooklyn artist Alena Spanger is gearing up to release her debut album, Fire Escape, on March 22 and here’s an early taste. “All That I Wanted” is decidedly quirky pop, danceable and charming.

ROSALI – “BITE DOWN”
Rosali has shared the title track off her upcoming Merge debut, Bite Down. “I had a string of conversations with close friends and family during the first year of the pandemic and a lot of talk that would circle around to everything feeling pointless,” she says. “‘Bite Down’ is about perseverance over the drowning depression with a prayer to come up for air, to keep living. In our isolation, finding community and support is necessary. We can find freedom when we find humility and compassion for others and are able to receive the same. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, everything has a price — energetically speaking — we are responsible for each other and for all living things.”

Experimental artist Tara Jane O’Neil has announced a new album, The Cool Cloud of Okayness, due April 26 via Orindal, and here’s lead single “Curling.”

YOUBET – “SEEDS OF EVIL”
Brooklyn’s youbet have announced a new album, Way to Be; it’s their first album for Hardly Art and due out on May 10 via their new label home. They’ve shared a new single, “Seeds of Evil,” and in addition to a Brooklyn show at Union Pool on Thursday (2/29) and shows with Mary Timony, they’ve been added as support to Coco’s East Coast tour.

THANK YOU, I’M SORRY – “WHEN I COME EAST”
Minneapolis emo band Thank You, I’m Sorry will release a new EP, Repeating Threes, on March 8, and here’s new single “When I Come East.”

MAGGIE GENTLY – “SAD SONGS”
San Francisco singer-songwriter Maggie Gently’s new single is an ode to sad songs in crunchy indie rock.

ACCEPT – “HUMANOID”
Metal legends Accept will release Humanoid on April 26 via Napalm Records, and the title track has arrived.

HINDS – “COFFEE”
Hinds, now the duo of Carlotta Cosials and Ana Perrote, have shared their first new single in four years. “Coffee is a sincericide, screaming the nasty truth as loud as you can with no shame,” they say. “It’s about admitting to all the things you’re not supposed to like or doing all the things you’re not meant to do. It’s a lot of fun when you can be fully honest and shut that little voice in your head that tells you what you should or shouldn’t do.”

GUSTER – “KEEP GOING” & “All DAY”
Guster announced their first new album in five years, Ooh La La, due out May 17 via Ocho Mule Records. “Most of these songs were written against the backdrop of what felt like an apocalypse,” lead vocalist/guitarist/bassist Ryan Miller says. “It was such a transformative time, and we were dealing with a lot of existential questions about what it means to be a father, a husband, a creative person in the midst of all the chaos.” They’ve shared two singles, “Keep Going” and “All Day.”

The Avett Brothers announced a self-titled new album, their first in five years, due out on May 17 via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. It was produced by Rick Rubin, and they’ve shared the lead single, the upbeat “Love Of A Girl.”

Shabaka Hutchings has announced his debut full-length album as Shabaka, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, following 2022’s Afrikan Culture EP. It features André 3000, Moses Sumney, Esperanza Spalding, Floating Points, ELUCID (of Armand Hammer), Laraaji, and more, and first single “End of Innocence” features another André 3000 collaborator, Carlos Niño. Tuareg group Mdou Moctar’s new album Funeral for Justice is their fieriest polemic yet, both lyrically and musically as you can hear on the title track.

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX – “TEJANO BLUE”
“When I was living in New York City I finally started listening to Selena’s “Como La Flor” at the same time that I was also listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins,” says Cigarettes After Sex’s Greg Gonzalez of the origins of this song. “I had the idea then to try to combine both of their sounds somehow, which felt a bit strange, but also felt like it was coming from a genuine place of rediscovering & finally connecting with the music that I heard around me in my youth.” The group’s new album is out in July.

T BONE BURNETT – “WAITING FOR YOU”
He’s best-known these days as an in-demand producer, but T Bone Burnett is also a singer and songwriter and he’s just announced his first solo album in two decades. It’s titled The Other Side and will be out April 19. “Waiting for You” features backing vocals from Lucius.
