20 Buck Spin signs a “mysterious” artist who pays homage to Type O Negative on debut single
20 Buck Spin, consistently home to many of our favorite metal releases, has signed an artist named Neon Nightmare, who appears to be keeping their identity under wraps. There’s a long list of video credits for their debut single “Lost Silver” but no songwriter or performer credits, and the artist has their face blurred out in their press photo. “Lost Silver” comes with single artwork that pays homage to Type O Negative album art, and the song sounds sounds a lot like Type O Negative too. Everybody seems to agree. Too on the nose? Maybe, but they do it really, really well. The artist’s bio also references Brooklyn, as well as the hometowns of Black Sabbath, Glenn Danzig and the Misfits, and the Delta blues (more specific tributes to come? a list of Type O’s influences?):
There’s nothing new under the sun, but maybe in the shadows there’s a chance…
Neon Nightmare’s particular shade of sonic darkness initially arose from the war-scarred industrial landscape of Birmingham, England. Or was it the Mississippi delta? Either way, pain and heartache seem to be an essential element. This vibrational current crawled across continents, shaking the basements of Red Hook, Brooklyn and haunting the graveyards of Lodi, New Jersey. The sound has lived in many forms, some colored by psychedelic experimentation and others raw and real.
You can check out the seven-and-a-half minute song and its very cinematic video below. The video for “Lost Silver” (Josh Silver?) was directed by Emmanuella Zachariou, who was also behind last year’s Portrayal of Guilt short film, and you can see the full credits on YouTube.
