13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

DEHD – “DOG DAYS”

Chicago trio Dehd release new album Poetry this week and here’s one final preview. “This song is a celebration for the messiness of life and the search for companionship,” says the band’s Jason Balla. “It’s about opening your heart and letting it be pummeled. It’s taking risks, receiving rejection, dealing out disappointment. It’s about being brave and sometimes making bad decisions. It seems like everyone I know is out here grasping at love and often, fucking it up, breaking hearts and having ours broken along the way. It’s just the rules of the game and I wanted to make an anthem for people on the same rollercoaster, just trying their best, losing fast and loving hard.” The video is set against a wild bar brawl.

THICK – “MOTHER”

Following “Father” in March, THICK have shared another new single, “Mother,” which they say is “a shoutout to all the caretakers in relationships who are sick and tired of falling into that role. It’s an easy trap to fall into, you start a relationship with love and care, then start to carry the burden of your partner’s wounds, becoming the parental figure, and wanting to heal them more than they want to heal themselves. Put simply: I’m not your fucking mother, I’m your motherfucking lover.”

SLASH FICTION – “GOLDEN HOUR”

Sheffield UK band Slash Fiction make anthemic, shoutalong indie rock. They jangle but with serious conviction as you can hear on “Golden Hour.”

FANCY GAP – “STRAWBERRY MOON” (FT. SHARON VAN ETTEN)

Singer-songwriter Stuart McLamb of The Love Language and songwriter/producer Charles Crossingham announced their self-titled debut album as Fancy Gap, out on July 26 via their own Ghost Choir Records. The lead single is “Strawberry Moon,” which features Sharon Van Etten. “‘Strawberry Moon’ goes back almost a decade for me,” McLamb says. “Back then, it had similar words and chords, but more of an 80s vibe with pulsing bass and synth. It slipped my mind for years until I stumbled upon it and stripped it down more like a folk song. I still didn’t think much of it until Charles and I talked about making a record together. He heard something in the demo that I didn’t, so we collaborated on the arrangement and were able to breathe new life into it. Rami and Graboff contributed so much to the mood of the song, establishing its time and place sonically. Around this time, Charles sent me ‘Like I Used To’ by Sharon and Angel Olsen, raving. I mentioned that I knew Sharon from way back, and Charles insisted we ask her to sing on ‘Strawberry Moon.’ Despite my reservations about asking for favors, I sent her the demo and she enthusiastically agreed. We recorded her part when she passed through town a few months later, and her contribution added depth and emotion to the song that wouldn’t be there otherwise. We consider Sharon one of the best that has ever done it.”
