Smashing Pumpkins Reunite With Producer Butch Vig for New Single
Billy Corgan recently shared an exciting update with fans via his Substack, revealing that Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins have reunited with iconic producer Butch Vig. This marks the first time the band has recorded with Vig since the legendary Siamese Dream sessions more than 33 years ago.
“We’ve just recorded one song,” Corgan stated during the broadcast. “It’s for a specific purpose, which I can’t give that part out yet. I haven’t come up with a title, honestly. The plan is the song will be released this year. I can’t say exactly when, but the song is really cool. It’s basically done recording—I’d say it’s 98 percent finished.”
Butch Vig played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s early sound, having produced their 1991 debut Gish and the 1993 masterpiece Siamese Dream. His influence on the era is undeniable, as he famously produced Nirvana’s Nevermind during the same period. Reflecting on that time in a 2021 interview, Corgan noted, “We were in the studio the day that he got the call to do Nevermind. I was literally in the next room. It’s one thing to look back at history and go, ‘Oh, how fantastic.’ But at the time, it was very insecure. None of us were guaranteed anything.”
The band, which currently features Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha, Kiki Wong, and Jack Bates, is gearing up for a busy season. They recently announced a North American arena tour that will spotlight their 1995 double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The tour is set to begin on September 30 in Columbus, Ohio, following a performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago on July 31.
Corgan expressed his enthusiasm for the current state of the band, noting that the recent studio work feels like a full-circle moment. “I presume we’re going to play some Siamese Dream for all you Siamese Zombies,” he added. “It’s in the stars. Pretty good week in Pumpkin Land.”
