Pearl Jam Guitarist Mike McCready Announces Decades-In-The-Making Grunge Opera/Graphic Novel ‘Farewell to Seasons’
After more than two decades of meticulous development, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready is finally pulling back the curtain on his passion project: Farewell to Seasons. The multimedia endeavor, which fuses a graphic novel with a corresponding rock opera, serves as a poignant, fictionalized love letter to the chaotic and creative explosion of the 1990s Seattle grunge scene.
A Deep Dive into Seattle’s Seminal Era
McCready, 59, announced the project on Thursday (March 13), confirming a partnership with publisher Z2. The graphic novel centers on David Williams, a fictional musician attempting to navigate the high-stakes, rapidly evolving music landscape of early 1990s Seattle. The narrative aims to capture both the euphoria of artistic possibility and the harsh, often tragic reality that defined the era for so many of its icons.
“It’s a story I’ve been developing for many years, inspired by the creativity, community, and chaos of the Seattle music scene,” McCready said in a statement. Co-authored with comic writer Mark Sable and illustrated by Sebastián Píriz, the book is scheduled for release on October 6.
The Soundtrack: A Lost Rock Opera
Beyond the pages of the graphic novel, Farewell to Seasons functions as a “historical fantasy” with its own sonic identity. McCready has composed an original rock opera that serves as an artifact within the story, told from the perspective of the protagonist, David Williams. Deluxe editions of the project will include a soundtrack featuring new songs from McCready, alongside high-profile collaborators including Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Dave Matthews Band’s Stefan Lessard, and vocalist Molly Sides of Thunderpussy.
Confronting the Legacy of Grunge
The project is deeply personal for McCready, who spent the COVID-19 pandemic refining the narrative with guidance from director Cameron Crowe. The story explores the “oily darkness” of self-doubt and the ultimate cost of fame for a generation of artists lost too soon. McCready notes that the project asks the difficult, unanswerable question: Was it worth it?
“I was thinking about all the singers that came from the Seattle scene and how many of them had since died,” McCready reflected. “Why did people become so interested in this music being made in Seattle?”
Behind the Creative Process
- Collaborators: Mark Sable (Writer), Sebastián Píriz (Illustrator).
- Soundtrack Contributors: Duff McKagan, Stefan Lessard, Mike Musburger, and Molly Sides.
- Themes: Magical realism, the price of artistic success, and the Seattle music scene (1985–1995).
McCready, who admits his ADHD made the long-form project a significant challenge, has spent the last three years taking professional vocal lessons to ensure his performances on the soundtrack meet his personal standards. While it remains unclear if a live production will eventually grace the stage, the project stands as a monumental reflection on a transformative period in music history.
