John Mulaney Sets Broadway Return With Love and Marriage Comedy ‘All In’
Oh, hello, Broadway lovers! Actor and comedian John Mulaney announced Monday that he will return to the stage in a new project from former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich.
Titled All In: Comedy About Love, the show compiles short stories about love, relationships, marriage, and more from previously published works of Rich and will star “some of the funniest people on the planet,” according to the production announcement. Mulaney will appear in the first few weeks of shows alongside a rotating cast of Broadway stars and comedy giants like Chloe Fineman, Richard Kind, Fred Armisen, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
“Sometimes they will play pirates, sometimes they will play dogs, and there’s one where we make them talk in British accents,” the announcement reads. “But even though the show’s kind of all over the place, it’s meant to tell one simple story: that the most important part of life is who we share it with. We hope everybody will relate to it, even if it was their date’s idea to come and they are starting out from a place of quiet resentment.”
Rich is best known for his work as a novelist and a writer on Saturday Night Live from 2007 to 2011. During his stint on the show, Rich worked alongside Mulaney and was on the writing team that received three consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing in a Variety, Music or Comedy Series. He’s also published dozens of short stories in the New Yorker and two novels. Director Alex Timbers is also a frequent collaborator of Mulaney’s, having worked with and directed the comedian in his two comedy specials, Kid Gorgeous and Baby J, and his Broadway show with Nick Kroll, Oh, Hello.
All In will premiere at New York’s Hudson Theatre on December 11. Tickets go on sale September 26.
“I am so goddamn happy to return to Broadway this winter with my favorite writer ever,” Mulaney wrote Monday, announcing the news. “All In: Comedy About Love by Simon Rich begins December 11 at the Hudson Theatre, directed by the incredible Alex Timbers. I’ll be leading the cast for the first five weeks. Be there.”
