Anthony Head, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Actor, Dies at 72
Anthony Head, the esteemed actor best known for his portrayal of the steadfast mentor Rupert “Ripper” Giles on the iconic television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 72. His passing was attributed to complications arising from pneumonia.
The news was confirmed by his daughters, Emily and Daisy Head, in a statement provided to the BBC. “He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” the statement read. “It has been, and forever will be, an honor and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”
A Legacy Beyond the Buffyverse
While Head’s role as the “Watcher” to Buffy Summers remains his most enduring contribution to pop culture—spanning 121 episodes of the original series, video games, and the Slayers: A Buffyverse Story podcast—his career was remarkably diverse. He was a staple of British television and theater, with notable roles in the sketch comedy hit Little Britain, the fantasy drama Merlin, and the acclaimed sports comedy Ted Lasso.
Born in North London on February 20, 1954, Head honed his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His early career in the 1970s saw him treading the boards in theatrical productions such as Godspell, The Rocky Horror Show, and Peter Pan. Before achieving global recognition, he became a familiar face in the U.K. through a series of popular Nescafe commercials.
Reflecting on a Storied Career
Head’s family noted that he took immense pride in his profession. “We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in — he loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades,” his daughters shared.
In a 2008 interview with the BBC, Head expressed a humble perspective on his fame, often encouraging fans to see actors as ordinary people rather than figures to be placed on a pedestal. His grounded nature and dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on those who worked with him and the generations of fans who grew up watching him on screen.
Head is survived by his daughters, Emily and Daisy. His partner, Sarah Fisher, a dedicated animal welfare campaigner, passed away in December 2025.
