Peaky Blinders Movie Coming to Netflix with Cillian Murphy in Starring Role

A Peaky Blinders movie is officially a go at Netflix, with production set to get underway in the fall.

Cillian Murphy, on the heels of his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer, will return to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby.

Tom Harper, who helmed several episodes in Peaky Blinders’ first season, will direct the film, working off a script written by series creator Steven Knight.

“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said in a statement. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

In his own statement, Knight added, I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

The British period crime drama first premiered in 2013 and follows a family gang, led by Thomas Shelby, in the years following the First World War. The series’ sixth and final season was set in 1933. Plot details, when the film will be set, and who else will appear in the film in addition to Murphy have not yet been revealed by Netflix.

Along with a full-length film, Netflix is also reportedly developing on two spin-off series. One would be a prequel focused on a young Polly Gray (Helen McCrory in the original series), and the other would be set in Boston as the Shelby clan moves its operations overseas.
