Jennifer Cooke x MYXE – We Are The Sound

75%%Overall Score

• Appreciated the sweet breakdown!
• Caveats with the transition
• Darker bassline in the drop, è la “Hexagon” style

This is not going to be a debate about the complicated issues of our society, but one thing is crystal clear: the EDM world hasn’t been as encouraging to female producer. We don’t like stereotypes here at the blog, so we are extremely glad to see that things are changing. Hexagon, after launching a mélange of subsidiary imprints, has introduced Lovelace Records, run by Jennifer Cooke.

With more than a decade of experience, the mentioned songstress and producer is leading an “all female label”. Of course, male producers won’t be excluded: the second protagonist of today’s highlight is MYXE (a guy). The label’s key motif lies towards girls, often underestimated by majority of the scene. And as much as we loathe unjust notions, we love underrated names!

This time around, the label-head and MYXE teamed up for “We Are The Sound”, a funky Future House tune that delighted us with its assortment of aggressive bass and complex patterns. The vocal (supposedly from Jennifer Cooke?) gets acquainted in the breakdown, building up a suave and delectable ambience before getting promptly disrupted by the said moody low-end. It’s evident that the Dutch artist added his nuances to the drop, after the “wobbling” sound that been the trendsetter in Hexagon. Candidly speaking, the contrasting personalities clash slightly during transitions, despite adding a surprising and intriguing effect.

In conclusion, “We Are The Sound” features an admirable set of drops and breakdown, however with faults that can be overlooked. This serves as extending reputation of the nascent sub-label, as upcoming names in the roster sure might bring unexpected stunners and might finally make the difference long needed in the scene!
