Flume x MAY-A – Say Nothing

• Dualism between drums and synths
• DnB finale leaving mixed feelings

I may have discovered Flume at the wrong moment.

The American creator exploded in popularity in 2012 and soon reached worldwide fame a couple of years later, being at the forefront of future bass pioneering. Unfortunately back in those days, the said genre was labeled a derogative status equal to Slap House from nowadays, since many heavyweights jumped on the bandwagon. Obviously, I wasn’t very devoted towards this new lineage of electronic music, perhaps missing out on one of the most creative individuals in the game.

Well, lesson learned. I won’t be making the same mistake again; Flume has finally made his return with “Say Nothing”. Featuring a fetching vocal from MAY-A, this single has been categorized as “Commercial” as its main genre, but that’s actually something out of the ordinary.

What immediately grabbed my attention was the viciousness shown by the drums, with a pluck clashing with the slower, elegant chords in the background. This striking dualism turns “Say Nothing” into an experimental hybrid that still holds a lean structure, all in regards to Flume’s production flair.

The concluding moments acquire a bolder DnB vibe with its percussions, a part that will be enjoyed by many, yet personally, I felt it didn’t connect as much as the prior section. There’s much going on with the vocal shots, an intricate detail to follow.

We have something truly artistic here, and I wanted to spread whatever awareness possible about Flume and his inventive ways to innovate. But that’s not all for sure, as his anticipated album “Palaces” is coming out this March!
