Madonna Covers Rent for Iconic New York Music Building Tenants

Madonna has stepped in to provide a significant lifeline to the tenants of the iconic New York Music Building, a Midtown Manhattan rehearsal space where the pop icon herself honed her craft early in her career. In a collaborative effort with the credit card company Bilt, the singer has covered a month’s rent for the musicians currently utilizing the facility.

Tenants were notified of the gesture via email, which confirmed that the partnership would cover up to $1,999.99 of May rent for every tenant in the building. The communication emphasized that the support was provided specifically because of Madonna’s desire to give back to the community that fostered her own artistic beginnings.

“It’s an amazing show of support,” said Gabe Kirchheimer, a drummer, producer, and longtime tenant of the building. “This building has been a musical incubator for decades, and something like 100 bands rehearse here every week. Musicians face enormous challenges in New York. It can be tough to cover the rent, and we really appreciate this.”

Kirchheimer noted that while the neighborhood has evolved through various phases, the building remains a vital hub for local talent. “The neighborhood has gone through a lot of crazy phases, and it can be difficult to attract clients in the current industry environment, but we are still here making music,” he added.

DJ Boy Wonda, another tenant, echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the building’s historical significance. “I literally went from boy to man in this industry during my time here at the iconic Music Building. Hearing all the classic stories and knowing that this is where Madonna started, I can’t be more grateful that they’re still here serving the music industry’s best in a time where the options are limited for musicians.”

In a statement provided to People, Madonna reflected on her own journey: “Artists arrive every day to New York, with a dream and more often than not with little else. As much as I struggled when I showed up here with nothing, I look back very fondly on this time in my life. The creativity, diversity and community of artists all supporting each other while having the freedom to experiment is something I would have never experienced in another place.”

Beyond the rent relief, the partnership between Madonna and Bilt includes a series of events tied to the release of her upcoming project, Confessions II, which is slated for release on July 3. These include listening parties across New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as an appearance by the star on Bilt’s monthly game show, Rent Free.
