Brandy and Monica to go head-to-head in upcoming Verzuz battle | NME
Brandy and Monica have been announced as the next guests on Verzuz.
More than 20 years after facing off on their hit song, 1998’s ‘The Boy Is Mine’, the pair will feature on the popular Instagram Live event – curated by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz – on September 1 at 1am BST.
In August, Brandy released her seventh studio album ‘B7’, eight years after her previous release, 2012’s ‘Two Eleven’.
The singer had announced the release of ‘B7’ last year, dropping a new single, the fierce ‘Freedom Rings’. The track marked the 25th anniversary of Brandy’s debut, self-titled album.
In a review of ‘B7’, NME said the album was “an album about love, but that love isn’t always for someone else”.
“It mostly thrives, thanks to her unwavering resilience, the unique texture of her vocals and the stellar production.”

Since launching earlier this year, the live-streamed Verzuz series has seen a number of industry heavyweights play off one another with their various hits.
Previous editions saw Snoop Dogg and DMX face off in “battle of the dogs”, while Rick Ross and 2 Chainz had their online clash last month.
During that battle, Ross performed an unreleased verse from Kanye West’s ‘Famous’, whose original version appeared on ‘The Life Of Pablo’.
Back in July, rapper T.I. challenged 50 Cent to a Verzuz battle in a message sent to the latter on his birthday. “Pull your ass up with 20 of your records, sit across from me, and get this work, man,” he said.
Cent responded jokingly to the offer, writing, “yo somebody passed TI the weed they gave smokey in Friday. LOL.”
