Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint is closed forever, but ‘to be continued’
Beloved Greenpoint venue Saint Vitus Bar was shut down back in February by the Department of Buildings. We were hoping the closure would be temporary, but as owners have now confirmed, the location at 1120 Manhattan Ave is now sadly closed for good. “120 Manhattan Ave. 2011-2024,” they wrote in a post on Instagram. “Saint Vitus Bar to be continued… Thank you to everyone who was a part of it. 🍻 Love and Hails, Arty, George, David”
Over its 13 year history, Vitus became an internationally known home of metal in NYC, was often compared to CBGB, and hosted everything from the “Nirvana reunion,” to Megadeth, to book events with Tony Iommi and John Lydon, to the (BrooklynVegan-presented) Chelsea Wolfe’s debut NYC show, to Thursday, to Against Me!, to Deafheaven, to Anthrax, and tons more. On a smaller level, it was synonymous with the local NYC metal scene, but also hosted music and dance parties from many genres.
We spent countless hours there and we’ll miss the Greenpoint location dearly, but we’re holding out hope for a new location one day, and thankfully meanwhile Vitus lives on by presenting shows at venues around NYC and even in NJ; find the current calendar here.
