36 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
THE LIBERTINES – “OH SHIT”
The Libertines’ new album All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade is out April 5 and here’s another rousing number from it. “Oh Shit” (not a Buzzcocks cover) is sung by Carl Barat.

MAL NOT BAD – “NO WORRIES”
Los Angeles artist Mal Not Bad announced their debut album, This Is Your New Life, due out this fall, date to be announced. They’ve shared “No Worries” from it, which they say is “this convergence of a protest song and a reflection of the difficulty of communication. I wrote it around mid-pandemic during the chaos of our previous presidency, police brutality, riots, and the pandemic itself – this constant cycle of horrible headlines and events that always exists, though the landscape/names might shift. It points to the disarray that happens when words and photos/documentation lose their power and meaning – an intense cycle that feels almost impossible to shake and can be dwindled down to everyday conversations we have with the people immediately around us. Understanding this hopefully can slow ourselves down to listen and speak with intention and patience.”

LUNCHBOX – “DINNER FOR TWO”
Oakland, CA indiepop vets Lunchbox have announced new album Pop and Circumstance which will be out May 10 via Slumberland. First single “Dinner for Two” is a blast of pure sunshine.

FANTASY OF A BROKEN HEART – “AFV”
fantasy of a broken heart, featuring Al Nardo (Water From Your Eyes, Sloppy Jane) and Bailley Wollowitz (Sloppy Jane) have signed to Dots Per Inch Music and released their first music for the label, “AFV,” which has a sweeping, epic feel while remaining rooted in indie pop. “I started writing ‘AFV’ during a sunrise walk home after the final show at now-closed Brooklyn DIY venue The Glove,” Wollowitz says. “I wanted to put some sad music on for the stroll but my phone was dead and the skeleton of ‘AFV’ appeared in my head to fill the void. Literally speaking, ‘AFV’ is a stoner comedy about having a meet-cute with someone on the subway and getting their number but realizing that they’re a weed delivery person who thought you were just trying to buy pot. Because you reek of pot and have been smiling at them while reeking of pot. Beyond that, it’s also about being inflicted with a demon’s curse that has stripped away your ability to feel any sort of joy.”

JUSTICE – “INCOGNITO”
Justice have shared the latest single from their upcoming album Hyperdrama, a disco-dance jam called “Incognito.”

FEARS – “CLIFF” FT. AGA UJMA
Constance Keane of M(h)aol is releasing a new album as Fears, affinity, due out on March 22 via her own Tulle label. The latest single is the dreamy “Cliff,” which features harp from Polish musician and composer Aga Ujma.

PHOSPHORESCENT – “IMPOSSIBLE HOUSE”
Phosphorescent has shared the second single off his upcoming album Revelator, which arrives on April 5. It’s a swooning indie-heartland ballad that finds Phosphorescent in fine form.

PILLOW QUEENS – “LIKE A LESSON”
Pillow Queens’ third album, Name Your Sorrow, is out next month, and the latest single is “Like a Lesson,” which the band says deals with “The notion of finding safety and comfort in the presence of love of limerence is emphasized, contrasting with the paralyzing fear of making mistakes or ruining your life or someone else’s. It delves into the feeling of being a lesson for someone, a side character in someone else’s story.”

KHARMA – “BY ANY MEANS” (ft. REGULATE)
Chicago hardcore band Kharma tap Sebastian Paba of Regulate for the latest track from upcoming LP A World of Our Own. Vocalist Jordan Moten says, “‘By Any Means’ is a very important song to me. It’s actually the first song that was written for this record. Being Black in America is tiptoeing every day of your life with the knowledge that one perceived wrong move could be your last. This song is a mission statement that sometimes it takes more than words to make people see where we’re coming from.”

MAY RIO – “FUN!”
May Rio is reimagining 13 songs from her discography on a new album, Elegant Ensemble, due out May 3 via Dots Per Inch Music. The collection also features a new track, “Fun!,” and May says, ”The day I got my driver’s permit, aged sixteen, I borrowed my mother’s forest-green Isuzu Trooper for a trip to a new movie showing at the mall. I picked up two of my friends, and with the radio blasting (101X), they waited on Walsh Tarlton for an opening to take a left. Though it was not late in the day, it was raining and overcast, so the three girls did not see the car (headlights off) approaching.”

PLANET ON A CHAIN – “CULTURE OF DEATH”
Planet On A Chain follow last month’s great “Cocalero” with another high-speed hardcore punk ripper, “Culture of Death.” It’s the title track of their next LP, due April 5 via Revelation.

BEABADOOBEE – “IT’S ONLY A PAPER MOON” (ELLA FITZGERALD COVER)
beabadoobee’s rendition of “It’s Only A Paper Moon,” written by Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, and Billy Rose, and made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman, and others, is the latest single from the Jack Antonoff-curated and produced soundtrack to new Apple TV+ series The New Look.

CARPOOL – “CAR”
In addition to making super catchy emo-punk anthems, Carpool clearly also have a knack for discordant screamo, as you can hear on new song “CAR.” It’s off their upcoming SideOneDummy debut My Life In Subtitles, which you can pre-order from us on exclusive clear vinyl.

JADE BIRD – “YOU’VE FALLEN IN LOVE AGAIN”
Jade Bird announced a new EP, Burn The Hard Drive, due out on April 10 via Glassnote Records. It follows her single of the same name and she’s shared another track, “You’ve Fallen In Love Again.” “I think we tapped into the dissociative mood I was in – I felt like I was hovering above myself,” she says. “I think that is probably the most relatable feeling, as opposed to the heartbreak. I needed to be free.”

JOYER – “FALL APART”
Joyer have shared another song off their upcoming LP Night Songs, and this one injects the band’s breezy jangle pop with a noisy, shoegazy freakout.

BABEHOVEN – “LIGHTNESS IS LOUD”
Babehoven’s new album Water’s Here In You is out next month, and the latest single is “Lightness Is Loud.” “We exist in a vacuum of sound, trying to hear each other, wishing to open up, seeing the abundance of light surrounding us, approximately 200 billion trillion stars and yet we falter, we harden in our shells,” Maya Bon says. “With the ‘coral snake curl[ing] inside you,’ I intend to evoke an image of protection. The ‘soft wool’ is the innate warmth and safety one can find within connection. The ‘rough blue’ is the scratchiness of the wool that can cause us to seek refuge away from one another. And the ‘pearl inside you’ is indicative of the belief that we all contain beauty, worthiness, a special gem within us.”

JOE ARMON-JONES – “WRONG SIDE OF TOWN” (ft. HAK BAKER)
Joe Armon-Jones has announced the Wrong Side of Town EP, due March 29. The just-released title track is a dub/reggae song with vocalist Hak Baker, and the not-yet-released “Nubya’s Side of Town” brings in saxophonist Nubya Garcia for “the traditional ‘horns cut’ that would appear on the b-side of roots reggae 12”s in the 70s and 80s.”

ADULT JAZZ – “SUFFER ONE” FT. OWEN PALLETT
UK band Adult Jazz are back with a new album, So Sorry So Slow, due out on April 26 via Spare thought. They’ve shared the richly orchestrated “Suffer One” from it, which features Owen Pallett. “The song itself is about romance and seeking connection, and the sometimes terror baked into that,” the band say. “It was one of the earlier tracks the lyrics were completed on, and it ends with a bit of pathetic fallacy indulgence, which I think in hindsight teed up a lot of the conflation of the personal with the ecological in the rest of the record. Weʼve been listening to Owenʼs music since we were 15, and have always admired their songwriting so we were incredibly honored they were up for it. The strings lent this final surge of energy that helped us feel it was done.”

CAMERA OBSCURA – “WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT IN A MAN’S WORLD”
Camera Obscura’s first new album in 11 years, Look to the East, Look to the West, arrives in May, and the latest single is “We’re going to Make it in a Man’s World.” “This is a co-write with Donna [Maciocia, keyboard player], one of the first of many songs we have since written together,” Tracyanne Campbell says. “It is a bit tongue-in-cheek with a serious message at its core. As middle-aged women in the music industry, are we relevant? Who is interested in us? Where’s our place in an industry where women are so underrepresented?”

Washer have shared a new single via Exploding In Sound, and it finds them in off-kilter, riffy, ’90s-style indie rock territory.

ELCAMINO x BOLDY JAMES – “NO FIGHTING” (prod. REAL BAD MAN)
Elcamino will release a new album, The Game Is The Game, entirely produced by Real Bad Man, on March 15 via Black Soprano Family/Real Bad Man. First single “No Fighting” is a dose of hypnotic boom bap nostalgia featuring Boldy James.

Nick Cave announced his 18th album with the Bad Seeds and shared the title track, which you can read more about here.

NOFX – “I’M A RAT”
As NOFX gear up for their final shows, they’ve also announced a new EP. It’s called Half Album, and it features five more songs from the same sessions that produced 2021’s Single Album and 2022’s Double Album. The lead single is “I’m A Rat,” a snotty, catchy skate punk song that sounds like classic NOFX. Fat Mike had originally given the song to Japan’s Hi-Standard, who released their version last year, and he also included an instrumental orchestral version of it on his 2023 album Fat Mike Gets Strung Out. KING HANNAH – “BIG SWIMMER” FT SHARON VAN ETTEN
The title track from King Hannah’s upcoming second album is one of two songs on the album to feature backing vocals from Sharon Van Etten. This song may have fans of King Hannah’s debut and 2019 mini-album double checking to make sure they’re listening to right song, as most of the band’s signatures are not here, with Merrick’s voice sounding more pure and vulnerable than we’ve previously heard, and not a lot of reverb. She also sounds great harmonizing with SVE.

LA SÉCURITÉ – “SERPENT” (STANDARD EMMANUEL REMIX)
Montreal band La Sécurité are releasing Stay Safe! REMIXED this Friday (3/8) via Mothland, featuring six new versions of songs from the band’s great debut album, reworked by Freak Heat Waves, Born at Midnite (mem TOPS), The Mauskovic Dance Band, Dur Club (Le Couleur), Malépart (Choses Sauvages) and this remix of “Serpent” by by Standard Emmanuel, aka Félix Bélisle who plays in La Sécurité as well as Chose Sauvages.

Finom, the Chicago duo of Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart who used to go by the name Ohmme, have announced a new album, Not God, which will be out May 24. This is the percussion-crazy first single.

JOHN CARPENTER – “MY NAME IS DEATH”
“Noir is a uniquely American genre born in post-war cinema,” says John Carpenter of the inspiration for his latest album. “We grew up loving Noir and were influenced by it for this new album.”

Austin band Good Looks will release their second album, Lived Here For a While, on June 7. This is the twangy first single.

ALAN BRAUFMAN – “EDGE OF TIME”
New York jazz legend and skilled saxophonist and flutist Alan Braufman has announced new album Infinite Love Infinite Tears that will be out May 17th via Valley of Search. The album was produced by his nephew, Nabil Ayers (who also runs 4AD records) and features Patricia Brennan (vibraphone), Ken Filiano (bass), Chad Taylor (drums), James Brandon Lewis (saxophone), and Michael Wimberly (percussion).
