24 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
JOE GODDARD (HOT CHIP) – “ONE WORLD (FLOW)” FT FLORIOUS
Hot Chip co-founder Joe Goddard has released a new solo single featuring singer-songwriter Florius on lead vocals. “When I wrote the chords for this song, I was aiming for something with the power of a hymn,” says Goddard. “Without discussing this concept, Fiorious added words that have a kind of atheistic spiritual quality that I always love in house music.”

Lawrence Rothman’s new album The Plow That Broke the Plains is out April 26 and here’s their collaboration with Amanda Shires. “Amanda and I have been working together the last 3 years, I produced her album Take It Like A Man and ‘Loving You’ with Bobbie Nelson,” says Lawrence. “We have a great musical bond and wonderful friendship. It made sense to have a close friend lend their voice to such a vulnerable song. Plus, I’m a huge fan of her delicate but powerful voice!”

ARAB STRAP – “ALLATONCENESS”
Arab Strap have released a second single from their upcoming album I’m totally fine with it 👍 don’t give a fuck anymore 👍. Says Aidan Moffat: “Lyrically it’s about being addicted to the endless stream of online lunacy and bullshit – constant bad news, disinformation and conspiracy theories, abuse and threats etc. – when I know I should be out engaging with the world in a more physical, meaningful way. But I can’t stop scrolling, because I’ve been conditioned to constantly seek and consume information, which perpetuates the tide of misery and makes me part of the problem … The title came from Marshall McLuhan’s terrifyingly relevant 1967 book The Medium is the Massage; he also coined the phrase ‘global village,’ and that’s where the ‘village hall’s on fire all day’ line comes from. Long story short: I need to get out more.”

JANE WEAVER – “ROMANTIC WORLDS”
“I wanted to write a really over the top love song, it’s kind of tongue in cheek and about romance and brief encounters with a wonky synth,” says Jane Weaver of the latest single from upcoming album Love In Constant Spectacle (4/5 via Fire). “It’s based on a ‘real life’ date after meeting online, how this changes from generation to generation and how romance is perceived now.”

FANCLUBWALLET – “EASY”
“‘Easy’ is all about growing pains,” fanclubwallet’s Hannah Judge says of the band’s new single. “I had been thinking about my younger self, who was so debilitatingly shy, and wondering what she’d think about me now playing music on a stage in front of so many people. It kind of bounces back and forth between me and the perspective of my younger self; contemplating the differences and wondering how things have changed as I’ve grown up. I think a lot of people wonder how their younger self would feel about them now. I think the chorus guitar swells on this song sound like a rusty swing set dug up from the past.” It’s from fanclubwallet’s new EP, Our Bodies Paint Traffic Lines, out next month.

ANNA TIVEL – “DISPOSABLE CAMERA”
Portland-based folk singer Anna Tivel announced her sixth album, Living Thing, due out May 31 via Fluff & Gravy Records. Of lead single “Disposable Camera,” she says, “A song for the everything of it all. For the wild science fiction of coming into the world. For the way it will break your heart. For the way it will make it race. Sometimes songs are slow and archeological, and sometimes they come busting out in one furious motion, just a potent feeling needing to come alive in language. I guess I wrote ‘disposable camera’ in this frame of mind, trying to get at the chaos and the meaning, the roulette wheel of places and situations to be born into, and the deep human urge to find beauty in the struggle.”

ANI DIFRANCO – “BABY ROE”
“The song ‘Baby Roe’ is a direct descendent of the book The Family Roe by Joshua Prager,” Ani DiFranco says. “This finely researched and grippingly told work chronicles the unfolding of events surrounding the 1972 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. Prager lets you way behind the curtain to meet all the characters involved, including the adult child of Norma McCorvey (aka Jane Roe), born and adopted-off in the course of her mother’s quest for the right to a legal abortion. Baby Roe, unaware of her role in history until she was an adult, remains, nonetheless, in support of a woman’s right to choose. As I would be.”
