Australia’s Girl and Girl prep debut album for Sub Pop, touring w/ Royel Otis (listen to “Hello”)
Australian band Girl and Girl have announced their debut album, Call a Doctor, which will be out May 24 via Sub Pop. That’s a little more than a year after Sub Pop announced the band’s signing. The band made the album in Melbourne with producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin).
The first single from the album is “Hello,” a catchy bit of indie rock that quotes from The Sound of Music and tracks a few awkward, desperate phone calls. “‘Hello’ is the story of a young man who requires daily consults with health professionals in order to rationalise his self-destructive thoughts and routines,” says singer/guitarist Kai James. “It’s about romanticizing your own misery. Letting those deep, dark, dirty thoughts take over. Understanding that even if you could pull yourself out, you wouldn’t because the constant stress and worry are all too familiar and comfortable.” You can watch the video below.
Girl and Girl will be in the US in March for SXSW and will then be back later this spring for a tour with another Australia band, Royel Otis, who just released their new album PRATTS & PAIN last week. That tour includes two NYC shows at Racket on April 30 & May 1. All dates are listed below.
