Australian DJ Phil K dies aged 51
The Melbourne artist died on Sunday, November 1st. After he was first diagnosed in 2018, the local music communities in Sydney, Melbourne and beyond rallied to raise funds to help pay for his treatment.
“His enthusiasm was contagious and after every encounter he always left me feeling inspired,” James Zabiela posted yesterday on Facebook. “He was like a spark plug. I could’ve done with being on the same continent as him more often over the years. He was generous, funny and always encouraging.”
Born on May 7th, 1969, Krokidis helped shape Australia’s dance music scene, particularly in the breakbeat sound. Throughout the ’90s and ’00s, he was one of the country’s biggest and most innovative DJs, with a knack for technical wizardry on the decks and, when they first emerged, CDJs. His best-known release is the Balance 004 mix, which landed in 2002.
Tributes have been rolling in for Krokidis. Read a few, and revisit Balance 004.
