Common refers to Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper as the artists who do "speak up" in their music.

While speaking with CNN about gun violence in a newly-released interview, Chicago lyricist Common explained that rappers shouldn't be required to speak out against violence. He did reveal that we should shift our focus to artists like Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper, artists "who have it engrained in them to speak up" on social issues.

"I like to focus on the [artists] who do speak up," Common said. "You do have the people like the Kendrick Lamar's and the Chance [the rapper]'s who say things in their music. You have to find the people who have it engrained in them to speak up for different social issues."

In addition to working on a new album that CNN reports will feature the "best music [Common] has ever made," the rapper will be featured in the upcoming action flick, Suicide Squad.

He says his time on set didn't conclude without him leaving with a few battle scars.

"I've got a scar now from this burn where I kept shooting a gun and the [fake] bullets were going into my chest," he said.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on August 5. There is no word yet on when fans can expect Common's next album.
